3 weeks backpacking trip to Nepal, where I did the Annapurna Circuit (including side trip to Tilicho Lake) as well as the Annapurna Base Camp trek.

Boudha [Nepal]

The world oldest and largest stupa (Boudha or Boudhanath) is the landmark of this place. On the outskirt of Kathmandu city, Boudha is now has the largest Tibetan Buddhist community outside Tibet. A spiritual place of Tibetan Buddhism it attracts pilgrims round the world to learn more about the philosophy and various practices.

Boudha is located on the ancient trade route entering Kathmandu Valley from Tibet.

We stayed in this area for 10 days so there were plenty of photo opportunitites for the account of life around the stupa and surrounding backstreets.

Apart from these visual pieces presented here, the resonant Tibetan chants and sounds of drums, bells and other musical instruments from the monasteries and chants from individual devotees circumambulate the stupa every dawn and dusk were the most enchanting experience I ever had. Really love this place!

p.s. most of the pics here contain quotes from various masters such as the 14th Dalai Lama, Shantideva, Soogyal Rinpoche, Jack Kornfield, Matthieu Ricard etc

Ancient town of Bhaktapur "City of Devotees" one of the most medieval and timeless old town is also one of my favourite, perhaps if I am in Nepal again next time I will stay in this place for a few days to absorb the wonderful atmosphere of the traditional way of life; and the beautiful squares and back lanes.

This is also one of the Nepalese city that got its act together to preserve its heritage, hence won the status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Part of the Bertolucci's 'Little Buddha' film was shot in the old square.

Bhaktapur is not touristy compared to most of the medieval towns in Europe. To maintain its current quality under the impact of tourism my suggestion is if you visit this place please consider 'low impact' approach - no big tour group; keep your voice down; don't make silly poses for photo shoots (aka Pisa's learning tower!); don't expect places like western cafe or bar; don't expect 5-star hotels. Please respect and support traditional way of life.

Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia and, as of 2010, the world's most recent nation to become a republic. It is bordered to the north by the People's Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by the Republic of India. With an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 30 million, Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass and the 41st most populous country. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and the country's largest metropolitan city.

Nepal is a country of highly diverse and rich geography, culture, and religions. The mountainous north has eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including the highest, Sagarmatha, known in English as Mount Everest. The fertile and humid south is heavily urbanized. It contains over 240 peaks more than 6,096 metres (20,000 ft) above sea level.

By some measures, Hinduism is practised by a larger majority of people in Nepal than in any other nation. Buddhism, though a minority faith in the country, is linked historically with Nepal as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who as the Gautam Buddha gave birth to the Buddhist tradition.

A monarchy throughout most of its history, Nepal was ruled by the Shah dynasty of kings from 1768, when Prithvi Narayan Shah unified its many small kingdoms. In 2006, however, decade-long People's Revolution by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) along with several weeks of mass protests by all major political parties of Nepal culminated in a peace accord, and the ensuing elections for the constituent assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the abdication of the last Nepali monarch Gyanendra Shah and the establishment of a federal democratic republic in May 28, 2008. The first President of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav, was sworn in on 23 July 2008.

The word "Nepal" is believed by scholars to be derived from the word "Nepa:" which refers to the Newar Kingdom, the present day Kathmandu Valley. With Sanskritization, the Newar word Nepa became Nepal. The Newars of present day Nepal, refer to all the inhabitants of Kathmandu valley and its peripheries (called "Nepa:") before the advent of Shah dynasty.

On our way towards Machhapuchhre, my cousin takes a moment to take in the misty mountains of Nepal. We were beside a raging creek where we took a short break but continued on to MBC where we saw much more beautiful sights.

We're just below 3700m (12,139') elevation at this point...

Note: This was taken on the way to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (and ABC afterwards), on the Annapurna Circuit close to Pokhara, Nepal.

Kanchenjunga (8586m) at sunset from Sandakphu, Sikkim. This viewpoint is an ideal place to view the mountain in the setting sun, although a little chilly at 3663m. The same cloud had been raining on us earlier in the day, so we paid our respects to the mountain gods for allowing us this fabulous view.

As we approached Boudhanath, clouds began to converge on the stupa. We took our clockwise stroll around as the wind picked up and gave life to the prayer flags. Powered by the surge of wind, small birds darted between the flags. As we left the stupa, the clouds remarkably disappeared.

As Heard & Said, The Lake Is At Unique Location, Quite Far Away From Hustle-Bustle City Area & Pollution. It Was Friday Evening When “We” Reached Nagdaha. But We Couldn’t Enjoy The Boating As One Of The Boats Men Told We were Little Late For It. He Was Saying Come Tomorrow & You Can Boat Till The Late Evening - Until It Gets Dark. So, We Just Had Fun Eating Foods At Nearby Restaurant & Enjoyed Watching Sunset & Some People Fishing & Some Lovers & Family Passing By!

If There Were Boats In The Lake While Shooting This Pic, I Guess It Would Have Been Fantastic. But This One Is Still Not That Bad, Right ?

Kagbeni lies in Mustang district of Nepal, one of the most famous for natural scenery and trekking. This picture was taken on my trip to the Muktinath temple of Mustang. Muktinath means "liberating" and the journey to Muktinath is really liberating, because of the wonderful natural scenery and surreal landscapes. Overlooking the buckwheat field is Mount Dhaulagiri, pristine and majestic.

I jus love how the waters of Begnas Taal (lake) seemed silky smooth when I took this one! I didnt know that in early mornings the waters could turn so gorgeous! When I saw this I clicked one or two times and then i thought I would come back later in the day to shoot some more but by the time I returned back, the silky effect had all vanished.

So I am kinda' regretting not clicking enough right away! It is silly of me to forget that it is equally necessary to click photo at the right time and not only at the right place! I could have gotten a much more wider view of this Lake n sadly in this one the lake is all obscured by the trees!

This Lake is one of 7 beautiful lakes that this region has. I had the most wonderful trip visiting and clicking away all 7 of them during my free Saturday the week before last. It was tiring, long and yet so rewarding.

I will again do the rounds of these 7 lakes after I get my new camera this holiday.

This group of French tourists was climbing uphill from Pokhara to Dhampus with us. After a rigorous climb of more than 1 n half hour, this particular man was really excited to see Annapurna Range so he was posing in front of the Himalayas, may be, n I got the perfect model for my shots. :)

Actually he was giving poses for one of his frens n i made the most of it too.

Tweaking the contrast a bit did sharpen the mountains, but no matter what amount of processing we do, it will not shine white!

Because like Mount Fishtail in this picture, mountains all over are slowly melting away. Even if a little bit of snow is added during the year, it melts off quickly due to global warming.

In the past, we could see Mount Fishtail shining white all year round but now it is only for a few months. Nepal, through which the Himalayas runs from East to West, is the world's 6th most vulnerable country to the growing climate change.

Hey everyone...in the blink of an eye my 2 weeks in village is over n here I'm back in Kathmandu, civilization, again!

Its not so nice to be back in the crowded, polluted streets of Kathmandu, but its heaven to be flickering thru all your wonderful photos n get inspired once again.

I see many wonderful photos that all of u have uploaded since. Will be going through everyone of them now.

This is a view of my village from a place some half an hour walk uphill. The only thing missing is the mountains that was visible clearly this day but couldnt be caught in a single frame. I do need a wider lens. Will be uploading one with the mountain too. Hover over the photo to see where my house is.

Machhaphuchhare is a mountain in the Annapurna Himalayas of north central Nepal. It is revered by the local population as particularly sacred to the god Shiva, and hence is off limits to climbing. It's also called the "Fish's Tail".

This is one of my favourite mountains in the Annapurna region and one has a splendid view of it from Machhaphuchhare Base Camp.

We finally came to this base camp close to the evening and managed to take this photo as the sun was setting around 5:35pm NPT (+5:45h GMT).

Photo was taken with a Nikon D100, 24-120mm 3.5-5.6 Nikkor D lens, and is perhaps one of my favourite Nepal photos that I've taken. :)

It stands on the banks of the holy Bagmati River, on the eastern fringes of Kathmandu.
Pashupatinath is also one of the most important Shiva temples on the subcontinent and draws devotees and sadhus (wandering Hindu holy men) from all over India.

It is a well known fact that Hinduism and Buddhism are the two major religions of Nepal, each having it's own rules and rituals. However, like most festivals of Nepal, both Hindus and Buddhist unite to celebrate the festival of Indra Jatra. This festival is celebrated by both Hindus and Buddhists with great enthusiasm. It is also believed that Indra Jatra is a festival of classical dances. It is on this very day when one is able to observe numerous varieties of traditional dances. The festival is named after Lord Indra who is known as the god of rain and also as the king of heaven.

The festival of Indra Jatra continues for eight days with much rejoicing, singing, dancing and feasting. People from all over Nepal, mostly those who live within the Kathmandu Valley, gather at the Hanuman Dhoka in Kathmandu. The first day of the festival is viewed by a large number of people. On that day, a long wooden pole is erected in front of the ancient Royal Palace at Hanuman Dhoka, in order to propitiate Lord Indra, the"god of rain". Classical dancers also assemble at the spot, wearing different kinds of traditional masks and costumes and dancing around the courtyard of Hanuman Dhoka to celebrate Indra's visit.

The pre-monsoon rain showers on Pashupatinath. This group of three - two girls and their guardian - were soaked wet when I first saw them , and the girls kept on running in and out of the rain.
